The El Paso Zoo has definitely changed from what it was before! The zoo was first created in 1940. The main creator of the zoo is currently unknown. But, the small staff consisted of a small business man, some circus people, and a couple of people that had some experience with animals. When the zoo first opened, it wasn't all that. Each enclosure was just a large cage with a bucket of water and some kibble. They didn't have much to work with. But, they made best of what they had.
Later in the 1940s, the zoo began to draw in more people. A lot more people started to develop interest in the zoo. The more people that came, the more money they made to fix up the zoo! The zoo then finally enough money to get remodeled! They added some ponds to the enclosures, some plants and trees. They also added some special buildings. The design was based on the species of the animal. The builders also added some artificial rocks.
Slowly the zoo started expanding. The zoo started receiving more animals. In the 1950s, the zoo reached it's goal. The zoo was officially popular! The zoo received one of its greatest changes! The zoo got an Asian elephant by the name of Mona. She was about five years old when they got her. She died at the age of forty-six at the El Paso Zoo. All of El Paso was devastated. Mona had a big impact on all of El Paso. The El Paso zoo received it's first veterinarian in 1965. Dr. Lea. He helped a lot with the zoo's popularity. He helped the animals with their diet and their appearance. After Dr.Lea nursed the animals to health, even more people started coming to the zoo. The animals looked amazing!
In 1976, the zoo officially became a department of the City of El Paso. By 1976, the whole zoo was transformed! The zoo had more animals, more enclosures, and more park attractions. The zoo now had a small reptile building. The zoo added a small train ride that would go around the giraffe, the zebra and horse enclosures. A zoological society was formed to help support the zoo and operate a gift shop.
In 1988 a new plan was created. A plan that would change the zoo forever! The plan was, to form different wings in the zoo. To separate the zoo into sections based on the animals originality. Based on their general global geographic place in the world. For example, all the animals from Asia would be in one part of the zoo. This made the zoo easier to navigate.
The El Paso Zoo is now a very famous attraction with a variety of animals and park attractions. Also including educational programs for children and adults! The zoo will always be a big part of good old El Paso!
